Historical Roots

Calhan’s rich history dates back to 1888 when it served as a water station for the now-defunct Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. Named after Michael Calahan, who laid the railroad tracks, the town was registered as “Calhan” due to a misspelling when the first U.S. Post Office opened. Since its incorporation in 1919, Calhan has grown rapidly, its growth punctuated by the establishment of the Calhan Rock Island Railroad Depot in 1906 to cater to the area’s expanding needs.

The community takes immense pride in its history, a past that includes the heroics of Jesse N. Funk, a local rancher who earned the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the First World War. They also celebrate cultural diversity, symbolized by the establishment of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, a female monastic community, by the Orthodox Church in America in 1993.

Welcome to the historic town of Ramah, a Statutory Town nestled in the heart of El Paso County, Colorado, United States. As recorded in the 2020 census, Ramah is home to 111 residents, each contributing to the unique character of this tranquil town. Traditionally, the name “Ramah” is believed to have derived from India, adding an interesting touch to its rich, diverse heritage.

Historical Highlights

Ramah’s history can be traced back to a settlement known as Old Zounds, situated 27 miles southeast of Kiowa. A post office named O.Z., named for the initials of the original location, served the community until around 1881. In a significant move that marked the beginning of Ramah as we know it today, the post office was relocated from Old Zounds to the emerging town of Ramah in 1889.

The late 1800s saw Ramah flourish as a small railroad town along the Rock Island Railroad. The town was officially incorporated on July 18, 1927, and during its heyday, it bustled with several hundred residents. The railroad, which linked Ramah to Colorado Springs, forty miles southwest, was the lifeline of the town. However, by the mid-1900s, the railroad was shut down, leading to Ramah’s decline.

Despite facing significant challenges, the resilient town of Ramah continues to thrive. Today, the town’s economy is primarily sustained by ranching, an activity deeply ingrained in the community’s way of life.
